Emergency First Response
Introduction
This Emergency First Response (EFR) course is an extensive 36-hour training programme accredited by the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC). It is designed for individuals in a first responder role, providing them with advanced skills beyond the basic First Aid Response certificate. This course has been recognised as the national standard of first aid training for Fire Brigades in Ireland.
The course is an excellent foundation for those aiming to pursue careers in emergency care, such as becoming a Fire Fighter, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Paramedic.
Our Team
Our faculty has extensive experience in delivering the EFR course to various stake holders including – Fire Services, Military, Offshore, State Services and Chemical Industry Rescue Teams.
The EFR course covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Emergency childbirth
- Use of oropharyngeal airways
- Oxygen administration
- Application of vacuum splints, collars, and spinal boards
- Helmet removal
- Administration of medications such as Salbutamol for Asthma, EpiPen Epinephrine, Glycerine Tri Nitrate, Glucose paste, and Aspirin
- Additionally, the course includes training in basic life support skills for handling situations involving stroke, cardiac arrest, heart attack, and choking. It also addresses legal issues relevant to first responders.
To enrol in this course, participants must hold a valid, in-date Cardiac First Response (CFR) or First Aid Response (FAR) certification.
Course Duration
The duration of a Emergency First Response course incorporating the CFR Advanced standard and assessment shall be no less than 40 contact hours (excluding breaks – averaging 6 hours instruction per day).

Certification
Award of joint PHECC/Approved Training Institute Emergency First Response cards/certificates to successful participants is mandatory.
Certification lapses after 3 years.
Assessment
Course participants may have their skills formally assessed throughout, or at the end of the course. The timing of this is at the discretion of the instructor.
However, both formative and summative assessments should be utilised in course delivery. Skill assessment sheets are developed and published by PHECC.
They are available for viewing on the PHECC website. The Responder Level Examination Handout for Recognised Institutions (PUB034) should be utilised.
